A Miami-Dade police detective has been jailed on charges that he fled the scene of a fatal hit-and-run accident that led to a six-car pileup in Davie in October. Broward County prosecutors say Michael Alayon, 28, left an early-morning car accident on Oct. 10 after he rear-ended his 1998 Lexus GS300 into a 1992 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Ryland ''Rick'' Nye on I-595. Nye, 54, of Pompano, was thrown from his truck and died instantly.
Alayon's charges stem from a probe by the Broward State Attorney's Office, the Florida Highway Patrol, the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office and the Miami-Dade Police Department. Alayon faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the charge, a first-degree felony. During the investigation, detectives found that after leaving the scene, Alayon attempted to cover up his role in the crash by reporting that his car had been stolen the previous evening during a burglary at his home. Miami-Dade officials are still investigating the case to see whether additional charges are warranted.
''We're investigating the fact that he made a police report about his car being stolen and his home being broken into which would appear to be false if he was driving his car at the time,'' Assistant State Attorney Michael Von Zamft said.
News of Alayon's arrest brought some relief to Nye's family. ''Justice needs to be served -- what more can I tell you?'' said Randy Nye, 47, who lives outside Gainsville.

Seems there are an awful lot of officers and officials in the Miami-Dade and Broward areas that have a drinking problem.
The trial in Broward County for leaving the scene of an accident involving death begins Mar 17, 2008.
when you are driking, agressive driving or just plain have a God complex as in this AYALON hipocrite, you belong in jail and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.... especially if you know the laws as in the police officer's case, who is now nothing but a criminal... Let it be a lesson that no punishment fits the crime of such case, he deserves the worst for killing a human soul, there is no price for that, may he be miserable for the rest of his life as he has done to the family of the victim, there is so much that needs to be added, but in this case let the system take its course and treat this former cop like the pathetic loser he is, I respect all officers and this is not to say that others do not commit such crimes, but an officer with the knowledge he has should know better, let the hands of law be applied to this crook as it would any other, he deserves no mercy for using a 4000 lb. machine to commit the hideous act of murder....

If drinking and driving was a crime 90% of us would be guilty. At one time, in everyone's life, everyone has driven home drunk. An example of that is coming home from a baseball game, concert, wedding etc. The only reason people are mad at this Officer is because he crashed the car and was not able to make it home. To sum it up people make bad choices but to give thirty years in jail is not going to make things any better, nor bring that person back. Giving a person 30 years only ruins another person's life. Meaning when there done with there term they have nothing so they revert to crime to make money. In my opinion the family should find it somewhere in there heart to forgive this officer for making a mistake that could have happen to anyone. I do not know about most people but I surely don't think of a lawsuit immediately after you lose a loved one. That family immediately filed to see how much money they can get by suing the Police Department in other words called DEEP POCKETS...
Not that any of you that have already posted will ever come back on this site, but I feel I need to say something. I agree with some of you but for the ones who think it's about the money, lawsuits, or anything else invovling the cash flow of it all, you're so very wrong. All we wanted was for something to be done right. Being there's more to the story than anyone knows, all we wanted was for this all to stop and we wanted our family back. The money wasn't a big deal and still isn't. We know what it is to struggle and we know what it is to live like we're on the top of the world. Both come with consequences. To this very moment, I would give everthing back just to bring him back. We love him, and we deal with this trauma everyday and it doesn't stop, and it will never disappear. Nothing anyone does or wants to give us will give us what we really want. Put yourself in MY shoes. Live my life for one day and see if you can wake up to a broken family.
Love Always...
